Time of Transition

He made no move to return Mello to his room when morning came. In fact, a good week later there was still no move being made to that extent, and on that morning, when Mello woke it was to the now usual configuration of Sephiroth being wound around him, pinning his hands. This time, however, the act was accompanied by the silver haired man actually being asleep still.

Not to say they hadn't been spending all their time together, but Mello hadn't had the chance to see him asleep until then, him holding out for the blond to sleep and then rising before he could.

"It isn't, but even I have to admit defeat sometimes. I can encourage you back to yourself after if I need to."

"That's not how it fucking works! You can't fucking mold me like that!"

He was panting heavily by now, his struggles weakening as he tried to pull away still to no avail, Sephiroth's grip like iron around his wrists. He yanked hard, hissing at a sharp stab of pain in his injured shoulder, a wave of nausea at the sudden intensity of it.

He moved forward, pulling Mello to his chest in a sharp motion and wrapping his arms around him, over his arms. "That's quite enough."

"Stop it! Let go of me! Let go!" He gasped and thrashed and tried not to whimper at the pain, biting haphazardly at Sephiroth's chest because his arms were caught.

"Enough I said! Or are you aiming to be driven back into modified pain sense?"

"No..." Mello bit his lip, pressing his face against Sephiroth's chest in a strange gesture between trying to shove him away and simply leaning on him. "Let me go..."

He kissed his hair. "No, now hush. I know that's hard for you but -try-."

It was the exhaustion of his weak body and the pain that made him fall still, not any desire to obey. Mello repeated his oft-stated mantra.

"I hate you..."

"So you've mentioned." Satisfied that he'd calmed, he moved one of his hands to stroke his hair.

"Stop doing that," Mello told him quietly, knowing Sephiroth wouldn't listen.

He hated when the man was gentle with him when he was so angry, hated the way he spoke softly and stroked his hair like he was soothing him, like a lover would do.

"You know I won't." He kissed his temple. "I don't know why you keep asking."

"Because if I gave up, I would never forgive myself." It was an honest answer. He had no reason to lie.

"That would be nothing that needs forgiving." He ran his other hand up his spine.

"No one's asking you."

"That doesn't mean I'm not answering."

"Oh, yeah. Real mature." He scoffed, trying to pull away again, and winced, biting his lip before he could make any sound of pain.

He tightened his arms. "I never claimed to -be- mature either."

Mello stopped fighting for now, suddenly sapped of energy.

"Just shut up. I hate talking to you."

"I won't. You've given me no incentive to do so."

He was too tired to keep repeating himself, so Mello was the one who stopped talking instead, shooting him a dirty look. The conversation, if it was that, was obviously over.

And nothing was accomplished. He could only hope Nakago was smart enough to win this if Sephiroth carried out on his threat. Mello believed he was. The only problem was that he was no longer even sure if his lover had given up on him... He must've, after so long. It didn't make sense.

Satisfied with the unspoken concession, he calmly, quietly, settled into petting his hair.

Mello stayed still, obviously ignoring him. His breathing was still a little harsher with pain, but he ignored that too.

Sephiroth would do as he said. Or at least try. Mello was pretty sure of that; the guy was obviously clinically insane at best. It was a long time before he spoke again, trying to think of a way to stop him.

"You shouldn't bother," he finally said softly. "There's no point. He's not looking for me."

"That doesn't matter. You want him to."

"I did. But if he obviously doesn't give a fuck, I don't anymore. I don't need him," Mello snarled, and he wasn't even certain himself if he meant it or not.

"You don't truly believe that, if you did, you wouldn't fight me like you do."
